There are approximately 120,000 described species of flies, and scientists believe the actual number is even higher. All flies belong to the Diptera family, which means they have two wings. Because of their feeding habits, they can easily pick up and spread bacteria every time they land on a surface.
Flies only consume liquid food. As a result, they must first dissolve solid food by releasing saliva before feeding. Depending on the species, they may live anywhere from 8 days to 2 months, although some can survive for up to a year.
